Soonews.ca touched back on Cycle to Walk’s progress from Ontario. The campaign is nearing its end!

[Ferris’] Cycle to Walk campaign cycletowalk.com has raised nearly $300,000 since then. The campaign will wrap up at Cape Spear, Nfld on October 1, and a reception at City Hall will take place at 1:30 that same day.

Ramesh Ferris was in Sault Ste. Marie this past summer and took part in the Rotary Community Day Parade.

Rotary works to eradicate polio

There are only four countries in the world that remain polio-endemic: Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Nigeria. Asselstine said it costs $1.50 per head to inoculate children from the highly contagious disease that spreads from person- to-person.

Canada is also part of the problem. Ferris is concerned about Canada because 11 per cent of Canadians are not vaccinated against polio. He noted the disease returned to Australia in 2007 for the first time in decades.

I’m just one who says if we can pool our resources for this, we can prevent 10 million children being paralyzed for the next 40 years. Polio vaccines have been available for 53 years, yet the disease continues to paralyze children needlessly to this day.
