Day 50 - Regina, SK - 15 km
- Sat, May 31, 2008
The Cycle to Walk team rode in to the City of Regina today accompanied by three local hand cyclists, Mike, Gabby, and Craig. Our safety was ensured by a full police escort into the city by Regina’s City Police. We arrived at the grounds of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building at around 11:30, and were greeted by City Councillor Sharron Bryce and Rotary Assistant District Governor John Dawes. Thanks to the Regina City Police for helping us arrive safely, thanks to everyone at the Legislative grounds for such a warm welcome to your city, and thanks to Craig Lenz – one of the three hand cyclists who joined me today – for making this all possible.
At noon, the sun stayed out for a lovely BBQ hosted by the four Rotary Clubs of Regina. Thanks for your support of Cycle to Walk and also it was great to have an opportunity to meet CKRM Radio host Roger Currie in person after we did an on-air interview earlier this week. Not only does Roger have a great radio voice, but he can sure BBQ a mean burger!
Later this afternoon, Craig led the team to Dutch Cycles, a wonderful fourth-generation family-run bicycle shop. Thank-you Freddy #4 for the tremendous support, and for fixing all of the hand-cycle tires. I’m now better prepared for the flat tires we’ll inevitably encounter on the road!
This evening the team attended a wonderful dinner at the Living Spirit Centre. Afterwards, we were given the opportunity to share Cycle to Walk’s message of Polio Eradication, Education, and Rehabilitation. Thanks to Heather Brownell and Anglican Bishop Greg Kerr-Wilson for organizing such a lovely evening!
Today was a great day, and we’ve got more planned in the days to come. I ask anyone and everyone in Regina to join me on Sunday in front of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum at 3 pm for a fundraising bike, hand cycle, roller blade and wheelchair ride around Wascana Park. We hope to see you there!
