Day 65 - Winnipeg, Manitoba - 12 km

by Ramesh Ferris, posted in Road Updates - Sun, June 15, 2008

This Father’s Day Sunday, the team was welcomed by Anglican Bishop Donald Phillips, his wife Nancy, Rev. Canon Bill Oakley, and the parishioners of St. Bartholomew Anglican Church.  Many people from the congregation approached us with donations and words of encouragement after the service, and the team had no choice but to remain in our pew as a result of the overwhelming support. Thank you so much to everyone for providing Cycle to Walk with the opportunity to share its message, for the donations, and for the kind words. It warmed our hearts.

Carly and I left social time a bit earlier than the rest of the team after church to visit the Winnipeg Hindu Temple. Upon entering a temple, it’s respectful to take one’s shoes off. However, I’m unable to walk without shoes: because of polio’s effects, I need a 3.5 cm lift on my right shoe to compensate for my short right leg. Members of the temple helped us brainstorm to find a solution to this problem, and the decision was made to use plastic shopping bags over my shoes so I could walk into the temple and discuss Cycle to Walk with members of Winnipeg’s Indo-Canadian community. Thanks so much to Hasmuah Pundia and everyone at the Hindu Temple of Winnipeg for welcoming the team into the temple, for providing donations, and for inviting us to the delicious lunch afterwards.

Jaime Ayers traveled with his wife Charlene to visit with his parents over for the last couple of days. Chris has been enjoying some time at his parents’ house while the team has been in the Winnipeg area. It’s so nice that some of the team members could be with their dads on Fathers Day. My Dad, Ron Ferris, has been such a huge support for me my entire life, and he’s been a tremendous supporter of Cycle to Walk from the very beginning. Thanks Dad for all of your love, friendship, support, and guidance. You truly are a role model for me and I love you very much. Happy Father’s Day to Ron Ferris and to all of the other fathers around the world today!
