Day 71 - Kenora, Ontario - Parade Cycling
- Sat, June 21, 2008
Members of the Kenora Rotary Club have been so supportive of Cycle to Walk while we’ve been in town. Jim Retson, Rod Riopel, Lloyd Mack, Buck Matiowski, and Larry Buhler have assisted in arranging events, press coverage, accommodations, meals, and so much more to ensure that the Cycle to Walk message would be heard in Kenora. There is a street festival this weekend, and we started the day off with a parade of Corvettes, horses and the Cycle to Walk team all falling in behind the St. Andrews Scottish Pipe Band. After the parade, the team set up a table inside the curling rink to sell t-shirts, provide information about Canadian immunization programs and take in donations. Thanks to the Kenora Rotary President Jim Retson and Vice-President Rod Riopel for assisting at the booth throughout the day and for being such great hosts. Below is a picture of Austin and Jake with me and the bike. While at the booth, we had the chance to show people the hand cycle and explain how it operates.
It was a great feeling for the team to be included in today’s community events. Thanks, Kenora, for listening to our message and expressing such an interest in the Cycle to Walk.
Today on the longest day of the year and as the sun set on Lake of the Woods, I thought of all the cyclists participating in the annual Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay in the Yukon and Alaska today. For part of my training I participated in this exciting event over the last two years. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable ride!
