Day 86 - Nipigon - Non-Cycling Day
- Sun, July 6, 2008
Members of St. Mary’s Anglican Church came together and prepared a lovely breakfast for the Cycle to Walk team this morning. Thank you everyone for your kindness! The breakfast was fantastic, and I’m sure that with all the pancakes, dishes of quiche, pigs in blankets, and eggs, I received my daily requirement of 5000 calories.
Reverend Diane Hilpert-McIlroy gave me the opportunity to speak during her sermon time; and if breakfast wasn’t enough, we all shared in a potluck lunch after the service. The congregation of St. Mary’s certainly ensured that the team was well fed and supported over these past couple of days!
Bino Ray and Don Ruoho offered to take the team walleye fishing on Fraser Lake, and they took us right to where the fish were biting. It was a nice way to cap off our visit in Nipigon – we’d all been looking forward to it since the offer was made last week. During the drive to the lake, I had an opportunity to learn about how polio has affected Don’s life. Don said that he had been looking forward to meeting the team for weeks, which was a real compliment.
To Bino and Cathy, Levina, Tasha and Pat at Skandia House, and Reverend Diane and Robert: the team really appreciates how you have opened up your homes to us over these past couple of days. Thank you!
I’m completely amazed by the love and support that has been shown by the people of Nipigon. Last year, the community had a tragic event happen where their town mill burned down and 130 families lost their main source of employment. In a town of about 2000 people, this was very significant. I’m honoured to have been able to feel like part of a community that has lost so much but yet is able to give so much of themselves in support of a polio free world. Thank you to everyone in Nipigon for your kindness and generosity!
