Day 91 - Wawa, Ontario - 82 km
- Fri, July 11, 2008
I’m so glad I get the job of hand-cycling when I see some of the jobs Doug Ayers volunteers for. Thanks Doug for doing the jobs that none of us on the road team really want to do – particularly when it comes to RV upkeep.
Canadians are fortunate enough to have a first-class sewage system. In developing countries where there are poor sanitary conditions, polio can spread easily from person to person. However, with that in mind, please don’t get me wrong: polio can easily spread from person to person in Canada as well. With 11 per cent of this country’s population not immunized, it truly is just a matter of time until Canada sees its next case of polio. Australia experienced a case of polio back in July of 2007. Please, everyone, make sure you and your children have been immunized. Polio is preventable.
The Reverend Bonnie Rayner and Rotarians Les Calkins and Phyllis Sullivan met up with the team when we arrived at the famous Wawa Goose. That goose is huge!
After we had a chance to freshen up and get settled in town, the team was invited to share its message with members of the Wawa community. Thank you to Les Calkins, Phyllis Sullivan, Mac and Barbara Lang, and The Reverend Bonnie Rayner for making the team feel so at home.
Dinner was fabulous, and after the cycling day, I really appreciated it. Thanks to Rotarians Anne and Dr. Mark Owen for all of your hard work to ensure that dinner was a success, and for rallying the town to our cause. Thanks also to everyone who brought a dish to share. After the presentation, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, and the Rotary Club of Wawa each presented Cycle to Walk with donations. Mayor Howard Whent and the community of Wawa really came together to support the cause. It means so much to all of us that each of you understand and support the message of Cycle to Walk.
