imageWe reached Southern Ontario after spreading the message of Cycle to Walk for a wonderful two hours on the M.S. Chi-Cheemaun ferry. I can’t thank Captain Kerry Adams and his crew enough for their wonderful hospitality aboard the ship. When we arrived, there were Cycle to Walk posters hanging up, and we were introduced over the ship’s intercom. Captain Kerry even invited the team and our new friends from Turtle Creek Lodge to the bridge for a tour. I even got to pilot the ship!

When Doug reminded me that there were 200 passengers on board, my nerves told me that I should just stick with hand cycling. It was really neat to steer, though! Doug provided me with five dollars to purchase a snack at the cafeteria, and I returned with $120 thanks to all of the people who came to speak with me and donate. The support and the words of encouragement were so uplifting –people are really listening to and supporting our message. Thank you to Captain Adams and all the crew aboard the Chi-Cheemaun for supporting Cycle to Walk and for treating us so well aboard the vessel.
In Tobermory, members of St. Edmund’s Anglican Church welcomed us immediately. There, we also met up with my long-time friend, Ashley Nelson, who joined me for the rest of the day’s cycle. We stopped in at St. Edmund’s for a quick reception and presentation, where I met with Wardens Jan and Sheila, and Eddy, a fellow polio survivor. He was just so happy to be a part of Cycle to Walk.
After we stopped to sign the guest book at the Tobermory Chamber of Commerce and Information Centre, we progressed forward on the route, receiving many cheers, honks, roadside donations and, to my surprise, snakes (That’s when I knew I was in southern Ontario)!
We had an organized event in Wiarton, so the team packed up and drove about 20 km in to town. We met with members of the Wiarton Rotary Club on the outskirts of town, and were escorted down the main strip and over to Bluewater Park – but not without first getting the attention of players and spectators at a baseball game that we passed.

The team arrived at the park to with music, and those in attendance met announcements of our arrival with applause. Thank you so much to the Rotary Club of Wiarton for your donation and for organizing a welcoming event for us. After a quick photo with the infamous Wiarton Willy, it was off to Gadd-About Bed and Breakfast where the owner, Danielle Paterson, graciously donated rooms for the team.
The team’s first day in southern Ontario has been just great. Thanks to everyone for supporting Cycle to Walk!
Take Care,
Ramesh
