Day 115 - Toronto, Ontario - Non-Cycling
- Mon, August 4, 2008
Well, family has always been important to me, so I visited my Aunt Marian, Uncle John, and Gram this morning with my brother Matt and sister-in-law Lynda. After a great visit, Matt, Lynda and I met the team at the ferry terminal and we headed to Toronto Island for the afternoon. Chris’ hard work paid off and our Toronto Island trip attracted a number of media hits as both Global News and Citytv took the time to visit with us and learn more about the Cycle to Walk campaign.
It was a beautiful day to spend on the island. We went for a bike ride, took plenty of photos, and soaked up some sun. While on the Island, we had a great chance to meet up with Captain Pete Gutenburg and his men at Toronto Fire Station 335. Let me tell you – those helmets are heavier than they look!
Thanks to Bertha’s Brother John and his son Kevin for joining the team today on the island. When the team headed back to the mainland, Captain Dean of the ferry Thomas Rennie allowed us to make an announcement about Cycle to Walk to the passengers aboard. After some loud applause, an individual approached the team and said that he was from the Toronto Star and that he wanted to take some pictures. The team headed to MuchMusic to see if we could promote the campaign during their live 5 o’clock segment, but unfortunately, no one was there because of the holiday.
We ended the day with a great meal at John and Jenn’s, where we later watched news coverage of the day’s Cycle to Walk events. It’s exciting for us to see the media come out and help re-open discussion about polio. Too many Canadians have forgotten just how bad this disease is, and there’s no reason it should still be around.
