Day 119 – Kaladar, Ontario - 109 km
- Fri, August 8, 2008
Gordon and Adele, our wonderful hosts, joined the team this morning to see us off. I figured we wouldn’t see one another again for some time, but it turns out I forgot my jacket at their house back in Peterborough. Thanks very much, Gordon and Adele, for driving out and returning my jacket. I’m going to keep a closer eye on my stuff from now on!
Today was an interesting mix of hard rain, cool winds and hot sunshine, but the weather did not stop us from spreading the message of Cycle to Walk. We received many honks, waves, cheers and roadside donations. People were very supportive of us as we cycled east from Peterborough.
As I hand cycled over the crest of a hill, I saw a family in the distance with Bertha and Carly. To my surprise, it was Doug and Bertha’s daughter Stacey with her husband Darren and their two children Bronwyn and Evan. Doug and Bertha have been talking about their grandchildren since Day One of the campaign, and it’s really nice to see them reunited with their family. Stacey and Darren flew down all the way from Whitehorse to be with the team for a few days, and with their arrival, Doug and Bertha’s entire family has joined us on the road at some point or another.
Today was the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing. The Olympics give people a level playing field to compete with the best athletes in the world in the sports they love. I would like to wish my Yukon and B.C. friends all the best as they participate in the Olympics over the next couple of weeks: Jeane Lassen, Zach Bell, Patrick Anderson, and Richard Peter. Please know I’m thinking of you and am very proud of your accomplishments. You are all excellent role models, and I wish you the best in your quests for gold!
