Day 127 - Maskinongé, Quebec - 157 km (Personal Best)
- Sat, August 16, 2008
It’s amazing to see how the weather can change over the course of one day. This morning greeted us with cool air and a thick blanket of fog. We hadn’t seen fog like this since we were travelling through the mountains in BC. Prior to hitting the road for the day, I was interviewed over the phone with a reporter from the Chronicle Telegraph, a Quebec City-based newspaper. The fog lifted shortly afterwards, and we were ready to roll.
Before getting started each morning, I will generally spend several minutes studying a map of the area we are in. I will visualize where I would like to hand-cycle to and highlight with a yellow marker the progress we’ve made. We always have a map of the current area on the wall inside the motor home.
By mid-morning, brilliant sunshine dissipated the fog completely, and the temperature had risen quickly. Towering thunderclouds formed in the afternoon and stayed within sight for the remainder of the day. The wind was with us all day, fortunately, and it kept the weather bomb in front of us.
Several hundred motorcycles travelled the opposite direction from us early this morning. I’ve never seen so many motorcycles in my life! Most of the bikers honked, waved, gave a thumbs-up or shouted encouragement to me as they whizzed by. It was great to receive that outpouring of support from such a large group of people on the road.
Weather conditions were just right, and I felt mentally and physically strong today. That combination resulted in me achieving two personal bests by the end of the day. I was able to hand cycle 67 km without stopping, and we travelled a total of 157 km for the day, making this the most I’ve ever hand cycled in one day.
The team works hard to ensure my dietary needs are met, my fluids are replenished, and that I’m as kept safe while on the road. Thank you to Doug, Bertha, John and Chris for being out here on the road with me. Your support and belief in the campaign make days like today possible.
