Day 144 - Thank-You John Firth - 59km
- Tue, September 2, 2008
Today started off with meeting Constable Phil Breedon of the Fredericton Police Force. Constable Breedon escorted the team through the busy streets to City Hall where we were met by Fredericton’s long time Mayor, His Worship Brad Woodside.
Mayor Woodside took great interest in the Cycle to Walk campaign, and he affirmed his belief in the need for communities to work together to ensure people get immunized. After our meeting with the Mayor, the team was invited to sign the city’s guest book (directly below Walter Gretzky’s name!), take photos, participate in some media interviews, and share the message of Cycle to Walk with people like young Ryon and his father Steve.
Fellow Yukoners Cory and Doreen Bruneau are on vacation in Fredericton right now and they met up with us after seeing the vehicles. Both Cory and Doreen have been following the campaign, and they wanted to show their support by coming to visit the team today at City Hall. What a nice surprise! Thanks so much Mayor Woodside and everyone who took the time to visit with the team and learn more about Cycle to Walk. After a quick lunch break, the team headed back out to the road to cycle closer to the Saint John area.
Today marks John Firth’s last cycling day with the team. It’s absolutely amazing how fast time has just rolled on. John joined the team in Ottawa, and it really does feel like yesterday. Thank you, John, for taking the time to share your belief with the rest of Canada that we can make this a polio-free world and that we can make a difference in the lives of polio survivors worldwide. It has been a lot of fun working with you over these past couple of weeks, and everyone on the team will be sad to see you go. You’ve been a great addition to the team, and have worked hard for this campaign. We’re thinking now that you’re done, you should treat yourself and head off to Jamaica or something! How about it?
