Day 147 - Saint John, New Brunswick - 5 km
- Fri, September 5, 2008
This morning Chris and I took a five-block stroll uphill to participate in two studio radio interviews. One interview was with Victoria and Dave at K100 FM and the other was with Gary and Ricky on 98.9 Big John FM. I’m thoroughly impressed with how each radio host is showing their own excitement for the cause of eradicating polio and bringing attention to listeners about taking responsibility for polio eradication, education, and rehabilitation. Individuals and communities need to come together for causes such as polio eradication, and it’s nice to know that the Maritime Media is doing their part to ensure that Canada’s east coast is hearing the message of Cycle to Walk.
Later this morning I had a chance to thank Saint John Hilton’s Head Chef Colin Sifton for providing such tasty nibblies to the BBQ we attended last night at Louise Beland’s house. At noon I was invited by David Veale to speak to several community leaders at Vision Coaching’s leadership forum. It was great to meet with local professionals, and it’s exciting to know that many of them will now go forth and share Cycle to Walk’s message to ensure that as many people as possible will support the dream of a polio free world! Thank you, David, for your continued support, the additional financial contribution from Vision Coaching, and also for lending your mother Kip to the en-route team – she’s a great asset for us on the road!
An interview on The Afternoon News with Tom Young ensured that people in Moncton, Saint John, and Halifax all had an opportunity to hear about the campaign this afternoon. Thanks, Tom, for helping us spread the word.
We ended the day with a police escort provided by Constable Tom Clayton of the Saint John Police Force. Marilyn, John and Louise joined us for the ride from the Hilton to the Digby Ferry Terminal. We heard many honks of support as we made our way through the city: curious onlookers peered through their windows, people shouted and cheered from their driveways, and they waved profusely from their vehicles.
Before retiring at the end of the night, I had a great visit with Yukoners Jim and Maryanne Thompson who are travelling with family to Newfoundland. Thank you both for taking the time to show your support for Cycle to Walk.
It’s absolutely incredible to see the excitement shown by community members who are just happy to be part of this wonderful campaign called Cycle to Walk. Thank you so much to Marilyn Singh, John Buchanan, Tammy LeBlanc, and Louise Beland for exercising your leadership skills, organizing accommodations and events, and demonstrating so much support for the Cycle to Walk campaign – you have quickly become great friends with everyone on the team, and we will be thinking of you as we carry on eastward. I’ll always treasure the warm memories of the great support and fun times in Saint John. Nova Scotia – you’re next!
