Day 148 - Paradise, Nova Scotia - 69 km
- Sat, September 6, 2008
After a lovely send off from our new Saint John friends John, Marilyn, Caleb and Andrew, the team boarded the Princess of Acadia for a ferry ride to Digby, Nova Scotia. The ship’s crew was nothing but welcoming, supportive and accommodating of the team, the support vehicles and the Cycle to Walk campaign. During the crossing, we visited with Captain Oral Hamilton up on the bridge to talk about the campaign and learn more about the ship’s operation and navigation systems.
Captain Hamilton allowed the team to make a PSA about the campaign to everyone on board and to sell t-shirts in the ship’s cafeteria. Several passengers bought t-shirts, made donations, and took the time to chat. One of the people who took the time to stop by and show his support was the Hon. Chris d’Entremont, who is both the Minister of Health and the Minister of Acadian Affairs for the Province of Nova Scotia. Minster d’Entremont was just returning from a meeting in Quebec City with other Provincial and Territorial health ministers and said that he had already heard of the Cycle to Walk and that he wanted to come say hello to the team.
Thanks so much to everyone on today’s crossing for all your support. The team rolled off the ship into warm weather and hard rain. Tropical Storm Hanna is coming our way, and she’s bringing warm, humid rainy, and windy weather with her. It was odd for everyone on the team to be so warm in weather that looked so foggy and cold! Visibility improved just as we were leaving the ship. We went forward in the rain and everyone was just so excited to be in a new province once again. We stopped at the tourist information centre for flags, maps and to sign the guest book. The staff at the info centre was very nice, and even donated to the campaign. Later on, we met up with some pretty excited supporters waiting on the side of the road to donate and say hello. They said that they heard of the campaign on television and were just so excited when they saw us roll through their community.
When the team ended the day in Paradise, we were greeted by Dave and Linda Hankinson, who live near where we stopped and were curious to learn about who we were. Dave then told us about the private ¾ km railway he built with his cousin and some friends for his grandchildren. When he offered to show us his homemade hobby train, we immediately said for sure!
This journey never ceases to amaze us. We never know who we’re going to meet and what we’re going to experience on any given day. It’s just so nice to be here in Nova Scotia! Let’s just hope Hanna behaves tomorrow…
