Day 154 - Truro, Nova Scotia - 56 km
- Fri, September 12, 2008
We didn’t have to get up at 5am – what a treat! The team enjoyed a little more rest than usual before we headed back to Shubenacadie to begin the day’s hand cycling. There were no dog threats today and all went well.
The friendly people we encounter on this journey are amazing. While at the Truro Information Centre, a staff member named Hailey assisted us with road maps, and at one point even phoned her father for suggestions on how to get through town in the safest manner while still following our approved ministerial permits. While snacking in the motor home, a curious man who was looking at the hand cycle approached us and introduced himself. His name was Charles Cox, and it turns out that he’s a town councillor here in Truro. Charles asked some questions to learn more about the campaign and then got on the phone. Within a few minutes Constable Dan Taylor from the Truro Police was there to provide the team with a police escort through town.
Not only was there a police escort, but Constable Taylor arranged a second escort to meet us at the border of his jurisdiction! Constable Fred Walker was waiting for us on the far end of a bridge and we were handed off from the Truro Police to the RCMP. Constable Walker then escorted the team through Bible Hill.
There was a great show of support from the communities we passed through today. Motorcyclists donated money, cars honked, and people waved all throughout the day. Tonight we’re staying at the Super 8 Motel in Truro - they’ve been kind enough to give us a complimentary room. If this local support wasn’t enough, Truro’s Rotary President, Ed MacDonald, greeted us at the local newspaper along with Richard Bowness and Frank Cassidy. There, they presented a cheque to Cycle to Walk on behalf of their club. Thank-you so much everyone for your spontaneous – and planned – acts of kindness today. I’d particularly like to thank Sharon Crowe from the Rotary Club of Truro for helping make today what it was – I just wish we could have met!
So many people have shown support of a polio free world today, and I feel inspired. Thank you!
