Day 156 - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island - 62 km
- Sun, September 14, 2008
Sometimes, in order to progress forward, you need to go back. The en-route team did just that today after ferrying across the Northumberland Strait to Prince Edward Island: we cycled west down the Trans-Canada Highway towards Charlottetown to share our message with the provincial capital.
Today’s road hazards were not dogs, but… wait for it… potatoes! I have never seen so many potatoes on the side of the road. Come to think of it, before arriving in PEI, I don’t think I’d ever seen potatoes on the side of any road, ever. There were dozens, though. I guess they fell off a truck or something.
Around midday, we stopped for lunch and several generous people came up to our table to donate and to wish us well! After lunch, we continued along the route and were stopped on several occasions by supporters who wished us well and provided donations. Two young girls who were with their father saw the team pass by their house. They were so excited to come see us that they ran to their father’s car from their house with no shoes to catch up with us! Their socks were surely red from all the PEI mud they’d walked through.
We’ve really been feeling the Maritime kindness we’ve heard so much about!
As we neared the Charlottetown area, the team pulled over unexpectedly. I soon learned that the trailer’s tire had gone flat. There were no worries, though: Doug, Chris and Kip worked together like they were in a grand prix pit stop and we were on the road again in no time! We traveled to the information centre in downtown Charlottetown and called it a day there. The team will spend the next 2 days here sharing the message before heading back to Nova Scotia on Wednesday morning to continue eastward.
