Day 159 - Just outside Antigonish, Nova Scotia - 47 km
- Wed, September 17, 2008
The team is now back in Nova Scotia after a few great days on Prince Edward Island. Once again we’d like to send out thanks to our hosts Tom, Barbara and Gordon – we really felt at home in Charlottetown. Prior to boarding the ferry this morning, we met up with Rick and Marjory Haugh, who are on holiday out here on the east coast. This isn’t the first time we’ve met these two: the Cycle to Walk team first met Rick and Marjory on Day 106 on the ferry across Lake Huron from South Baymouth to Tobermory. What are the odds that we would run in to one another a second time nearly 2000 km down the road? What a coincidence! Thanks to you both for taking the time to say hello and for supporting the dream of a polio-free world.
The first day on the road after a couple days of community events is always a bit challenging – both physically and mentally. It didn’t take too long to get into the zone today, though. It was nice to get some kilometres behind us. We had dinner with the Rotary Club of New Glasgow, as well as with members from the Stellarton and Westville clubs. Once again, we were able to reinforce why it’s so important to keep up the fight against polio, and once again, Rotarians showed their support by donating to Rotary International’s PolioPlus program. I’d like to thank District Governor Doug Logan, President Diane MacNeil and all the Rotarians who invited us to share the message of Cycle to Walk with you today. I’d particularly like to thank Rick Goodman, who has been our primary contact and biggest supporter in the area.
After dinner, the team was split up into different billets. I stayed with Rick and his wife Nancy, and we really got a good chance to talk. Rick is a polio survivor: he contracted the disease when he was 11 months old. Rick has not let polio beat him, though. He’s gone on to become a lawyer, golfer, and avid hand cyclist. We spent the evening talking about our experiences with polio, and even compared braces. The other team members stayed with Pat Craig and David Prince as well as Sherry and Bob Moore. A great big thanks to all who graciously opened up their homes to the team. Your generosity and commitment to the cause makes Cycle to Walk grow even more within each community.
