Day 160 - Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia - 85 km

imageThis morning the Honourable Peter MacKay joined the team for one of our most original meetings to date! Mr. MacKay took one of the hand cycles for a ride through New Glasgow with Rotarian Rick Goodman and me. Constable Graham Purvis, of the New Glasgow Police, escorted us safely through traffic.

The three of us had a good long talk – partly in thanks to the hills we had to climb as we rolled though town. It was Mr. MacKay’s first time on a hand cycle, but the hills didn’t slow him one bit and he seemed to have a great time. Thanks, Mr. MacKay, for helping the team spread the word to the people of New Glasgow about the need to come together and eradicate polio once and for all. Thanks also to Rick for putting your support behind us and for joining us while we were in town!

Lisa MacDonald, CAO of New Glasgow, greeted us at the end of our ride. Everyone stayed around to chat for a while before we parted ways and continued along the cycling route. It was a bit of a wet cycle for most of the day, and fall weather is definitely taking hold. The sun is still strong, but the air is brisk in the mornings and the leaves are changing colours on the trees.

I hand cycled until sunset and we arrived on Cape Breton Island just as it was becoming too dark to stay on the road. Patrick Lamey, President of the Port Hawkesbury Rotary Club, surprised us at a restaurant and took the time to welcome us into town. Patrick went completely out of his way to say hi to us, as his wife was at the hospital and they are expecting their first child. Thank you so much for the warm welcome to Port Hawkesbury, Patrick, and for showing your support. Congratulations to your growing family, and I wish you all the best in health and happiness with your new baby.
