Day 120 - Merrickville, Ontario - 114 km - 5000 km mark!
- Sat, August 9, 2008
What a great day for hand cycling – I feel great! At one point in the day, I cycled 51 km without stopping. I think what added to my energy was the amount of people who cheered, honked and stopped to make donations. There were even people cheering us on from their boats in the water. Cycle to Walk continues to gain momentum as it makes its way east. I’m glad to see that Canadians are thinking about polio again.
Today the campaign crossed over the 5000 km mark. To the board of directors of the Cycle to Walk Society, volunteers, staff, and of course, the en-route team members, I appreciate everything you’re doing for this campaign. Thanks to everyone for all the amazing work you’ve done to get us this far into the journey.
We were welcomed into the town of Smiths Falls by local Rotary President Brian Fuller and past-president Doug Hazen. Thank you to the Smiths Falls Rotary Club for your donation, and your continued commitment to a polio-free world.
Doug and Bertha had another opportunity to spend time with their grandchildren, while Chris, Carly and I spent the night at Cathie and Bruce Scott’s house in Merrickville. Cathie was the nanny of our Ontario Route Champion, Kevin Rumsey and his brother back they were just young boys. Cathie still has her wooden spoon, so don’t worry – everyone was on their best behaviour. Thank you, Cathie and Bruce, for your great hospitality, and thanks to Kevin for all the work you put in to this campaign.
