Day 49 - Regina, SK - the 2000 km mark!
- Fri, May 30, 2008
After the Rotary District 5550 conference, the Cycle to Walk team drove back to Chamberlain – where we had left off yesterday – and resumed the hand-cycling at about 4:30 pm. Today was a wonderful day for cycling: golden sunshine, emerald fields, puffy clouds… and tailwinds. I’ve been hoping for tailwinds like these for weeks!
Because of those wonderful winds, it only took 2 hours and 37 minutes for me to hand cycle 77 km. I love tail winds! Approaching the Regina area near Lumsden, there is a steep valley. I reached speeds of 72 km/hour while heading down in to the valley, however, a bridge at the bottom with a metal-grated section punctured two of my bike’s three tires. It felt almost as if I had gone over a speed trap. We stopped immediately to switch to my back-up hand cycle, and then progressed forward to the ‘Welcome to Regina’ sign. The Cycle to Walk team is so excited to be in Regina to spread the message of Polio Eradication, Education, and Rehabilitation. We’ll be in town until Tuesday!
