Today was the team’s last full cycling day in the Province of Saskatchewan, and like most days over the past couple of weeks, there was a strong easterly wind. For most of the day I felt alone out there on the road, and didn’t think I would have a whole lot to write about in the blog. I’m happy to say that by the end of the day, things changed.

During a break this afternoon, we ran into three power line technicians from Sask Power. Thanks to Rock, Derek and Chad for taking time out of your busy day to say hello and to wish the team well. It was particularly touching to hear about how polio has affected your families.

As the afternoon progressed, I saw a lone man walking with a backpack. I learned that his name is Joseph, and that he started walking across Canada from Vancouver on April 1st with plans to arrive in St. John’s by November 1st. It was great to speak with you, Joseph, and thank you for taking interest in Cycle to Walk and its goals of polio eradication. I wish you good health and safe travels on your journey.

As the team passed through a construction site, a worker ran across the highway to hand a donation to the Cycle to Walk support team. As I cycled by, the same man shouted, “Good luck, man. I know you can do it!” The support we get on the side of the road is always encouraging and is very much appreciated!

We approached Moosomin and were welcomed by Kevin and Kara, two reporters from the Moosomin World Spectator, which is the oldest newspaper in Saskatchewan. To our surprise, they invited the whole team to stay at their home after the interview, and even treated to dinner! Thanks so much, Kevin and Kara, for the warm hospitality and the meal. I feel I probably should have mentioned that I eat 5000 calories a day before you offered to pay!

It’s been such an honour to meet so many warm, caring, and giving Canadians throughout these past three provinces and one territory. I’m just so proud to call myself a Canadian, and look forward to spreading the message of polio eradication, education and rehabilitation to the next province.

Manitoba, watch out: the Cycle to Walk is on a roll and we’re headed your way!
