Day 70 - Kenora, Ontario - Non-Cycling Day
- Fri, June 20, 2008
Below are some of the questions from students I answered today while visiting Ecole Ste. Marguerite Bourgeoys here in Kenora. Today’s visit was my last school presentation until classes resume again in September. Thank you to everyone for showing so much interest in the Cycle to Walk today. It’s important that we all work together to educate others about polio and the need to get rid of it forever, and to assist polio survivors in poor countries.
Do you like having a crutch?
Growing up and going to school was tough.I was often judged, teased, or picked on in social situations, and it was always harder for me to fit in. When I went back to India in 2002 and witnessed the reality of polio survivors living life in the dirt, I began to truly appreciatewhat I had. Regardless of my disadvantages, I could stand up on my on two feet with the assistance of braces and crutches.
Why are you doing this?
I don’t believe that any child in this world should have to live with the effects of disease which is completely preventable through vaccination. Polio survivors around the world do not deserve a life of crawling in dirt.
Would you rather people ask what’s wrong with you than just stare?
Yes. I feel it’s important for people to take the time to ask questions so they can learn about what’s wrong with me instead of stare, judge and form an opinion.
This morning we went for a boat ride on Lake of the Woods and docked at the Kenora Safeway to do some grocery shopping. I can’t say I’ve ever taken a boat grocery shopping before! The remainder of the day was spent relaxing at our hosts’ cottage on the lake. Thank you Larry and Marilyn Buhler for sharing your beautiful cottage with us and for all the gourmet cooking,. It is a real treat to be staying with you!
