We hit the 3000 km mark of the campaign this morning in Wabigoon, ON, and we are so energized by this milestone. Campaign headquarters has just informed us that the total value of contributions to date is just over $211,000. There’ll be more where that came from: Bertha was busy counting up donations today.

To celebrate the 3000 km milestone, Bertha cut my sandwich into three pieces today, but I didn’t realize what she’d done until after I ate the first piece. I’m thinking I might opt to share the 7000 km sandwich when the time comes! Everyone on the road team and at the office in Whitehorse is just so excited and ready to roll further into Eastern Canada.
Late this morning, after hand cycling 27 km, the team backtracked to Dryden to attend the local Rotary lunch meeting. There, a longtime Rotarian named Roland Swan inspired me. Roland was growing up in Holland during World War 2. Even though he was just a kid, he’d been shot at, bombs blasted near him, and he dealt with things that kids today just don’t have to worry about. Roland moved to Canada in 1953, and he told me that of everything he’d seen, polio scared him the most. Most people in my generation have no comprehension of the devastating reality of polio. It’s important that younger generations learn about polio and what their parents and grandparents had to deal with. Polio isn’t history yet, but together, we can make it so.

Thanks to President Shane MacKinnon and everybody at the Rotary Club of Dryden for helping the Cycle to Walk campaign make a splash in your city! After the Rotary meeting, we dropped Chris off at the Greyhound Bus station. He’s off to Thunder Bay to help set up for our arrival on Saturday. There’s a full slate of activities planned for Thunder Bay – check out our Events page to see what’s happening!

We got back on the highway at about 3:30 pm, and I hand cycled an additional 93 km from the spot we left this morning. The team arrived at the town of Ignace shortly after 8:30pm, and now, it’s time for bed.
