Day 88 - Just past-Schreiber, Ontario - 37 km
- Tue, July 8, 2008
Safety is essential for the road team, other motorists, community members and myself. Today was the first day we had to cancel a cycling day because of the weather. We woke up this morning to a thin mist in Schreiber, but it gradually turned into a thick fog with light rain as we climbed through the Jackfish Bay area. It was just past Jackfish that the team decided to head back to Schreiber in a blanket of fog.
The Reverend Joan Cavanaugh-Clark and her parishioners at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church hosted the Cycle to Walk team to a potluck dinner. Afterwards, Cycle to Walk conducted a community presentation so people could learn more about polio and why we’re doing what we’re doing. Everyone was wonderful, and it was great to have the opportunity to answer so many questions after the presentation. Thank you to everyone in Schreiber for making us feel so welcome. Mayor Madge Richardson even came out to visit with the Cycle to Walk team.
At this point in the campaign, I have completed a lot of presentations, and have seen people become emotionally attached to Cycle to Walk. It’s great when people learn what we’re doing and make a point to educate the people in their communities about polio and the message of Cycle to Walk. It means so much to me when people take the time to tell me that they appreciate hearing the message, they believe in it, and they will do what they can to take the message to others and make it louder.
As the day went on, the fog dissipated. As I look out the window and see blue skies and sunshine, I’m thankful for the kindness and the words of encouragement after yet another successful community engagement opportunity. Now let’s just hope that the sky’s still clear tomorrow!
