Day 24 - Hinton, Alberta and the 1000 km Mark
- Mon, May 5, 2008
Today was the last day of hand cycling through Jasper National Park. As we left the park, a friendly Elk wished us well for the rest of the journey. Today was the start of the Alberta Foothills, and on a hand cycle, let me tell you: they sure feel like mountains!
It was such a wonderful feeling for me today. I was hand-cycling up over yet another hill, and when I reached the top of it, I couldn’t see any mountains ahead. I realized then that I had successfully hand cycled through the Canadian Rockies.
There were a couple of roadside supporters: a gentlemen from the Edmonton area who saw a previous news clip on television pulled over and made a donation. He also gave me some words of encouragement. Another individual was completing a spring clean up along the highway – she quickly gave a cheer of support as I hand-cycled up a hill beside her. It’s always so nice to have media waiting for the team as we approach a community, as this was the case as we entered into Hinton. Cycle to Walk had an opportunity to share it’s message with Hinton Parklander reporter Rhys Kelso.
At approximately 4:00, I had hand-cycled my 1000th kilometre. The team cheered and we staked the ground marking its significance.
And some news from headquarters in Whitehorse: the Ladies of the Harley Owners Group, and Harley Davidson put on a Cycle to Walk fundraising pancake breakfast. Hurlburt Enterprises Inc. put on an open house where Cycle to Walk t-shirts and wrist bands were sold, and as well, donations were being accepted at the Whitehorse Lions Trade Show. Thanks to everyone in Alberta for being so welcoming and thanks to everyone back in the Yukon for continuing to show your support for Cycle to Walk. I truly appreciate all that you’re doing!
