Day 42 - The Battlefords, Saskatchewan - Non-Cycling Day
- Fri, May 23, 2008
I was reassured of the importance of Cycle to Walk’s message today. My good friend Jody Studney flew down to the Battlefords, her hometown, from Whitehorse to visit with the team and arrange a speaking opportunity with students at her old High School. Because of Jody, students at John Paul II High School heard the message of Cycle to Walk this morning during their phys-ed class.
In the late morning, there was a great opportunity to speak with the Mayor of the Town of Battleford, Chris Odishaw, as well as the Mayor of the City of North Battleford, Julian Sadlowski. Thank you to both mayors for welcoming the Cycle to Walk team into your communities.
Thank you, Mayor Sadlowski, for your offer to obtain information regarding the rate of polio immunizations in your community. Thanks also for being so willing to share the important message of Cycle to Walk with your colleagues. In order for Cycle to Walk’s message to be heard by people across Canada, it’s important that community leaders use any means possible to share the message. We need to come together to rid the world of polio once and for all, and we need to continue to immunize ourselves and our children against polio.
It was a real pleasure for the team to meet with members of the Battleford Boys and Girls Clubs this afternoon. Everyone was just so excited about learning about polio, trying out the hand-cycle, and spreading the message of Cycle to Walk.
This evening, team enjoyed time with our host families. Doug and Thelma Ebach provided an opportunity to ride some horses out on their lovely ranch nestled beside the North Saskatchewan River, and I had a BBQ feast with the entire Studney Family! Thank you so much to Doug and Thelma Ebach and Ron and Dean Studney for opening up your homes. You have truly made our visit to the Battlefords a memorable one!
