Hike to Walk - Thanks, Golden Horn Elementary!

by Ramesh Ferris, posted in Road Updates - Sun, June 1, 2008

Thank you so much to all of the hard working students at Golden Horn Elementary School in Whitehorse, Yukon for their recent “Hike to Walk” fundraiser in support of the Cycle to Walk polio campaign!

It touches my heart to know that people in my hometown and throughout this great country are rallying together to help their communities understand that polio is still something we need to focus on. Thanks Golden Horn School - you are truly making a difference, and all of you are in my thoughts as I hand cycle across Canada to raise funds and awareness for polio eradication, education and rehabilitation efforts.

I encourage all students and teachers across Canada to follow Golden Horn Elementary’s lead and use the Cycle to Walk campaign as an educational tool to engage everyone and talk about the importance of immunizing ourselves for protection against polio. If you’re looking for a fundraising idea, check out the Purple Pinkie Project package in the “Promotional Documents” section of this website’s Media Centre. If we work together as a global community, we can rid the world of polio, and help support those for whom immunization is too late.

Below are some recent emails I received from the Grade Five Class at Golden Horn Elementary School:

Hi Ramesh!

It is the Grade 5 class at Golden Horn Elementary School in Whitehorse here. We are exhausted! We JUST hiked for a total of 9 km up and down our namesake mountain, Golden Horn, as part of our “Hike to Walk Campaign” to support your efforts to eradicate polio.

We notice that you have cycled between 74 and 90 km per day during your time in Saskatchewan…we are humbled as we find ourselves tuckered out after a 9 km experience. We will all sleep well tonight!!

“Dear Ramesh, Just to let you know that the Grade 5 class raised $752 and we hiked up the foothills of Golden Horn Mountain. We hiked nine kilometres. But you’re doing 10 times as much as us, but we’re raising lots of money for your campaign. We hope you all the best! We hope you make it!!“
- Kole

“Dear Ramesh, I hope you can keep going and I wish you all the best!“
- Kaleb

“Dear Ramesh, We just arrived from a 9 km hike up Golden Horn Mountain. It was tiring! The weather was not very good. It was raining and windy. We are lucky to have such caring people as you to hand-cycle across Canada and raise money for polio. Our class raised around $752. I think we got the message about polio to many people. I had a very good time. Please keep in touch!“
- Cassidy

“Dear Ramesh, Today we hiked 4.5 km up Golden Horn Mountain and down 4.5 km. We collected pledges for this and sent them to your Cycle to Walk Campaign. The scenery and stuff was beautiful. Everyone was throwing rocks in the river. The entire school is rooting for you! Only the intermediate grades hiked to the top. But some 3rd graders came along to the top. The grade 4s raised $752. How are your legs? I think you are very heroic.“
- Samantha

“Dear Ramesh, Today I went hiking on Golden Horn Mountain for you. It was really fun! I was looking forward to it. We went for 9 km today. Once we got to the top of the mountain we got to eat lunch and I was frozen. We raised a
lot of money.“
- Rachael

Here are some pictures of polio survivors and how they must live their lives. The polio vaccine has existed for 53 years.  There is no reason that young people should still be contracting a preventable disease! Please help Cycle to Walk raise funds to help immunize the world’s children and support the people for whom immunization is too late.
